My Review of Evolution Bycycle #IndoorCycling Studio

icon_logoI was recently invited by Evolution Bycycle’s co-owner Rich Davila to visit and attend a class. Rich and Allison who co-own the studio, launched it in December 2013 and then relocated it in September 2015. The studio is now inside The Fields Sports Complex, located at 8 Cornwall Court, East Brunswick, NJ 08816. Ample and free parking is available (I visited on a 12308453_1188317354529782_4793296140238201135_nThursday evening and there were plenty of available parking spaces). Once you enter the club, make a right and walk past the open court (where fencing classes often take place) to the back corner of the building. Evolution Bycycle is tucked in the corner and accessible through two flights of stairs (second floor). On December 6, Evolution Bycycle celebrated its second birthday!

Indoor Cycling

Rich and Allison spent sometime with me to discuss their vision and what inspired them to open Evolution Bycycle. Rich and Allison launched Evolution Bycycle since there were no nearby independent indoor cycling studios. Rich and Alison have a passion for their business and focus on winebuilding a sense of community by engaging their members, offering traditional indoor cycling classes, fund-raising/charitable rides, a variety of class themes, as well as a unique “Spin for Wine Thursday – S4WT” class which is the first of its kind that I have seen. According to Rich, S4WT, is “perfect for your mind, body and spirit, riders of all levels are welcome and are instructed to modify the workout to your ability…. We will work hard and as a reward for that hard work, we get to enjoy a healthy snack and heart healthy glass of wine!”. My visit was on a Thursday and the class was sold out!!

AC_Perf_Plus_11Evolution Bycycle focuses exclusively on indoor cycling, with several classes offered per week. Regular class durations vary from 45 minutes to 55 minutes. There are 25 Schwinn AT Performance Plus bikes with the traditional cages, are SPD compatible and offer a very quiet ride (bring your own cycling shoes as renting shoes in not currently offered). Reservations can be directly made using the studio’s website (http://www.evolutionbycycle.com/pages/buy-rides). Evolution Bycycle uses PIQ metrics to display each rider’s cadence, power, interval duration, heart rate and other parameters on two large screen TVs situated above the instructor’s bike. Riders can opt out of participating in PIQ. Per class prices start at a very affordable $16 per ride and you can choose from a variety of packages such as 10 rides for $145, 20 rides for $275 or 30 rides for $390. Additional packages are also available for students at a discount. Rich and Allison value feedback from their members and often offer special packages and fundraiser rides for local & community charities.

1119151822Rich and Allison welcome each member and check them in using an iPad. Walk-ins are welcome and payment can be made using credit cards. Towels are provided and an open storage unit is available inside the studio. The studio is spacious, well ventilated and is meticulously clean. Signature orange towels are placed on each bike and free bottled water is available.

 Quick Summary

Final Thoughts

Rich and Allison are passionate about indoor cycling and about their studio. Their mission of having a community-driven indoor cycling program have created a loyal following. This was evident during my visit: a loyal rider made it to class and rode for the full duration even though she was still recovering from foot surgery (she was wearing a “boot”). Now this is what I call dedication, and it is in no small part due the spirit of support and community you will find at Evolution Bycycle.

I wish Rich and Allison continued success in their journey as they celebrate their second year of business. Thank  you for the opportunity to visit and review your studio.

My Review of CycleMaplewood #IndoorCycling Studio

When Cycle In Motion (Maplewood, NJ) closed its doors in August 2013, 1416029805Allison Leonard, one of the instructors and a personal friend, decided to acquire the bikes, re-imagine and then re-open a new indoor cycling studio in Maplewood NJ.

Overview

After 4 months of searching for a new location and much persistence, Alli launched CycleMaplewood at a unique venue, the Woodlland: “Completed in 1930 as an elegant home for the Maplewood Woman’s Club organization, the Georgian Revival style mansion and adjoining auditorium were designated a local historic landmark in 2014. Renamed The Woodland, this architectural jewel houses two unique spaces which are available for private parties and public events.” Alli approached the Township of Maplewood’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs department about starting an indoor cycling program that would be inclusive, affordable and accessible to the community. “We have an “if you build it, they will come” philosophy: we felt Maplewood needed an affordable indoor cycling program as a fitness resource, and we’re betting on you.”

cyclemaplewood

Indoor Cycling

CycleMaplewood focuses exclusively on indoor cycling, with several classes offered per week. Occasionally, a yoga class is also available. There are 15 Spinner Pro bikes with the traditional cages. These bikes are the workhorses of the Spinner brand, are SPD compatible and offer a very smooth ride. Reservations can be directly made using the studio’s website (http://www.cyclemaplewood.com/reservations.html). The bikes are located on the actual stage, with the Woodland concert hall in front of you if you are a rider. This is the most unique setup I have seen, lending some distinctive acoustics to the ride in addition to the charm of a historic landmark, theater lights and floor-to-ceiling show curtains. CycleMaplewood is a no-frills studio, offering several classes per week at a very affordable cost of $14 per class. A “book” of 10 classes is offered at $120, or you can take advantage of a monthly subscription at $60.

 Quick Summary

Final Thoughts

Alli’s vision is simple: “CycleMaplewood is a community indoor cycling program…it represents the best of citizens working with government.” Alli is tenacious, dedicated and one of the most hard working individuals you will ever meet. She is also an excellent indoor cycling instructor who motivates her riders and pushes them to exceed their expectations. I wish Alli continued success in her journey.

My Review of Rock ‘N Ryde #IndoorCycling Studio

Overview

logoIn July, I visited Rock ‘N Ryde to attain Real Ryder certification. The indoor cycling studio is inside a larger facility, TEST Sports Club, yet retains its separate space with access to lockers, showers and abundant parking. The studio was launched in February 2014, is impeccably clean and offers modern amenities at affordable prices. It is located at 1931 Washington Valley Rd, Martinsville, NJ 08836, phone number 732-868-5400, http://rocknryde.com/. During the visit, I met with one of the owners, Lynn Vanderbeek, who was also attending the certification workshop. The studio is easily accessible from Route 22 and I-78, and is surrounded by several eateries and shops, with free parking near the studio’s entrance (which is shared by TEST club). There is a large reception/waiting area, with a retail shop and prepared foods. 0613151359 DSC_3343 rr

Indoor Cycling

bike_alone_side[1]_previewRock ‘N Ryde focuses exclusively on indoor cycling, with several classes offered per week. Inside the 800 square feet studio, there are 20 ABF8 Real Ryder bikes that are SPD compatible. The instructor’s bike is elevated on a platform and is in front of a mirrored wall; the sound system is located to the right of the instructor’s bike. A large flat screen TV above the instructor displays metrics captured by the MyZone Heart Rate Monitoring System which is used to track real-time progress (the bikes are not equipped with power meters). The optional strap can be purchased and metrics can also be stored and accessed from the studio’s website. Reservations can be directly made using the same website (http://rocknryde.com/apps/mindbody/station-schedule). The interface is realryder_abf8provided by Mind & Body software and is easy to use on a desktop or mobile device. Rock ‘N Ryde offers a variety of class types and lengths; however, because they are well aware of the adjustment period necessary to ride comfortably on a Real Ryder bike, an introductory package is available for 30 days of unlimited rides at a very reasonable $119 (or $39 for students). This offers a new rider the opportunity to get acclimated to the ABF8, which allows for lateral movement, giving riders the ability to engage more core muscles and replicate an almost-outdoor ride feel. The single class price is $20, with the first ride offered at no charge. Rock ‘N Ryde also offers private rides, corporate rides and fund-raising rides.

Final Thoughts

In the past two years, numerous indoor cycling studios were launched in NJ. Competition is heating up; yet, with Rock ‘N Ryde you will get a unique bike platform (Real Ryder), numerous classes, access to amenities of a larger fitness facility, all at affordable prices. The owners are dedicated, hands-on and teach classes. Therefore, if anything needs repair, it will be addressed quickly and efficiently. I wish the owners, Lynn, Robin and Jeff continued success and I hope to visit soon.

My Review of Tandem Cycle #IndoorCycling Studio

In late June, I was graciously invited to visit Tandem Cycle by its founder and owner Maryclaire Pennotti. Tandem Cycle tandem-logo(http://www.tandemcycle.com) opened its doors in late March 2015 in Manasquan, NJ, a vibrant NJ Shore community of Monmouth County. The studio is easily accessible from East Main Street (as well as the Garden State Parkway, Route 35 & Route 71) and is in close proximity to the NJ Transit Manasquan station. The studio is surrounded by several eateries and specialty retail shops, with free parking near the studio’s entrance as well as on adjacent streets (Warren Av., Euclid Av.). The studio space was modernized and renovated, offering numerous amenities such as changing rooms/lockers, a retail mini store, storage cubbies, dedicated reception and a large waiting area.

Overview

Maryclaire founded Tandem Cycle after a career in pediatric nursing. With no nearby  studios and a passion for indoor cyclingl from previously attending classes in New York, Maryclaire created Tandem Cycle with the “goal to better ourselves and the world around us”. According to Maryclaire, “each time you get on a bike, you provide school children from every corner of America with the opportunity for a better education. The more you ride, the more you provide. Public school teachers across America post classroom project requests through DonorsChoose. Every ride at Tandem Cycle will help fund a selected project. You have the potential to provide public school children in all 50 states with the tools and experience needed for an excellent education.”  3l

Tandem Cycle focuses exclusively on indoor cycling, with several classes offered per week. There are 20 Schwinn AC GS69865_SchwinnACPerformanceCyclingBikePerformance bikes without the traditional cages . That means you can bring your own cycling shoes or rent ones for the duration of the class ($2 fee). These bikes are SPD and Look compatible offering a very smooth ride with the patented Carbon Blue drive train. The instructor’s bike is elevated on a platform and is in front of a mirrored wall. Reservations can be directly made using the studio’s website (https://clients.mindbodyonline.com/classic/home?studioid=197459). The interface is provided by Mind & Body software and is easy to use on a desktop or mobile device. Tandem Cycle offers a variety of class types with the most common class duration being 45minutes. Prices start at $20 per class with discounts offered for students and multi-class purchases. The “20 class package”, at $350, is the most cost effective, in addition, unique 3-month packages are offered such as “Shedding for the wedding” at $375 and “Baby bounceback” at $375 as well.

For Summer 2015, Tandem Cycle is offering a very aggressive package for new clients, an unlimited 30-day ride package for $100. With shore traffic increasing during the summer months, this deal will generate enough new riders who will likely become regulars.

Quick Summary

Final Thoughts

Tandem Cycle  provides a modern indoor cycling facility with a cutting edge bike platform, the Schwinn AC Performance, in an area that has the demographic to sustain the business model. Maryclaire’s story is inspiring – it epitomizes the determination of small business owners who pursue their dreams through hard work, persistence and a vision that drives ultimate success. Tandem Cycle’s mission is empowering and uplifting – to go above and beyond – “to help ride for yourself. ride for others. ride tandem.”

My Review of Momentum Cycling & Fitness #IndoorCycling Studio

Momentum Cycling & Fitness (http://momentumnj.com/, 908-277-1333) is located at 33 Union Pl, Summit, NJ 07901 and Region Captureopened its doors in September 2014. It is on the third floor, accessible by stairs and an elevator. Momentum is a modern fitness studio that offers indoor cycling as well as TRX & personal training classes. The studio is located on Union Place, a busy road with several name-brand stores such as Subway, Dunkin Donuts, Manhattan Bagel, Starbucks and a local diner. Finding metered parking on Union Place is very challenging at best, especially if you are attending a class during normal business hours. You may have better luck finding parking on nearby adjacent streets such as Bank Street, Board Street or Springfield Av. The studio is within walking distance to the NJ Transit Summit train station. Metered parking is free on Sundays. Check out the Summit parking map for additional information (http://momentumnj.com/summit-parking-map).

Disclaimer

I taught indoor cycling classes at Momentum from September 2014 until February 2015, but I am no longer teaching there.

Overview

The studio was founded by Camellia Redmerski & Nekki Robinson, former Wall Street traders, whose inspiring story can be Camellia_&_Nekki_mediumthumbfound here: http://momentumnj.com/our-story. Their commitment is evidenced by their motto: This is your workout. This is your place. Make it your moment. The studio itself is spacious with on-site daycare, a TRX/HIIT/personal training room and the cycling studio. Momentum is an official Spinning facility and one of the first in NJ to use the advanced Blade Ion bike platform.

The space was renovated and restored before the launch of the studio and includes modern amenities such as changing rooms/lockers, showers, retail mini store, dedicated reception and a large waiting area. Mini lockers are also available and easy to use (digital coded locking system).

Indoor Cycling img-slider1_31_700x312Region Capture4

Momentum uses 30 Spinner Blade Ion bikes with power meters (all are compatible with SPD clips) situated in a three-tier stadium setup. There are two instructor’s bikes (elevated on a platform) near the entrance and close to a new sound system. A lighting system is also in use and adds unique effects that can be controlled by the instructor. A mirrored wall behind the instructor’s bikes is often used to inscribe motivational quotes and updates to the schedule. Several classes are offered per week. A free introductory class is available to new riders. Performance IQ metrics are used (with opt-out option) and can be displayed on one of three large flat screen TVs. Stats can also be emailed to riders for reference during promotional rides or for overall record keeping. The Spinner Blade Ion has an advanced computer that monitors cadence, power, interval duration, heart rate and other parameters (can be paired with a compatible wearable device or smartphone).

Final Thoughts

Momentum provides a modern Spinning facility with cutting edge tools such as Performance IQ metrics and the Spinner Blade Ion bike. Nekki and Camellia are energetic owners, active in the local community, and both with large families of their own, they have extended that family feeling to their studio. You can typically find them at the reception area, actively engaged in running the business, working with customers, and on occasion attending or teaching a class. Nekki and Camellia are also well known for their community outreach, working with several local organizations to promote important causes by holding fund raising rides and events at the studio. I wish them continued success.

My Review of Go Ryde #IndoorCycling Studio

photoGo Ryde (http://www.goryde.com/, 20-30 W Main St, Somerville, NJ 08876  (908) 864-7933) is one of only three indoor cycling studios in NJ that utilize the Real Ryder bike platform. They also offer TRX & personal training classes. Go Ryde is located in downtown Somerville, a busy area with some challenging parking (depending on the time of your arrival). Street parking is metered. Bring quarters. You may find more spots in the adjacent streets (Bridge St, Division St, Maple St, or South St). Also, during the summer, the downtown area is bustling (many nearby restaurants and cafes), so arrive early to ensure you can park and make it to class on time. rr Overview

oThe studio was founded by husband and wife team Bill & Courtney Kemmerer who are both USAC CAT 1 expert level mountain bike racers and TRX Certified Group Instructors. The studio’s main entrance features a small waiting room, a Real Ryder demo bike, a small retail display and a storage area. Passing through the reception area, there are two rooms: one for TRX (and other classes) and one for indoor cycling. Bathrooms are in the rear of the indoor cycling room. The studio space is a bit dated, but is clean. There are open storage cubbies and the bathroom doubles as a changing room.

Indoor Cycling 1424350_678994545453273_986729482_n

Go Ryde utilizes 15 Real Ryder bikes (some with power meters, all are compatible with SPD clips) situated in a three-tier stadium setup. The instructor’s bike is near the entrance and is close to a new sound system that was recently installed. Given Bill & Courtney’s outdoor bike experience, their choice of the Real Ryder ABF8 platform is mainly due to the “unique, articulating frame that allows it to steer, turn, and feel like a road bike. That side-to-side motion requires constant shifts of balance – continuous adjustments and corrections that correspond to a rider’s movements on the road while encountering wind shifts, obstacles, and banked and curving surfaces.” RealRyder I was invited to attend a regular 60min class and found the experience of riding the Real Ryder1375220_663485607004167_1864603511_n fun and exciting. Unlike other bike platforms I reviewed (Keiser M3, Spinner Blade Ion, etc.), the Real Ryder takes a while to get used to – probably 3 to 4 classes and the swaying motion can be confusing at first. However, not trying to control the sway, but flowing with the motion is the key to an engaging ride. It might seem a bit scary at first, as if you may lose control, but the Real Ryder is sturdy and responds quickly to any movements when you go into turns, accelerate to climb or burst into a sprint. Some of the bikes had a power meter, but others did not. However, it seems the emphasis at Go Ryde is the mechanics and overall benefits of the resulting cardio workout rather than measuring photo104watts, kcals or distance. The studio is equipped with professional lighting and an overhead projection system (during my ride, the instructor used Cycle Fusion’s app to display the intervals and intensity levels).

Prices & Process

Reservations can be directly made using the studio’s website (http://www.goryde.com/schedule/#!). Go Ryde’s online reservation system is easy to use and their ride prices vary based on a single ride ($24) or a membership model. The basic membership model offers unlimited rides and TRX/Kettlebell/Yoga for $87 a month plus an $87 initiation fee. The professional membership model offers unlimited rides and TRX/Kettlebell/Yoga for $167 with a 12 month commitment but no initiation fees. These membership models also have cancellation policies and other restrictions – more details can be found here: http://www.goryde.com/about-our-classes-and-packages/

Quick Summary

  • Towels are not provided but cubbies are available.
  • No shoe rental is offered.
  • Wipes are available.
  • Parking can be challenging.
  • Real Ryder experience is unique, fun and as effective as other platforms.

Final Thoughts

Go Ryde offers a unique indoor cycling experience using a bike platform that resembles riding outdoors.  The owners are at the studio during business hours and are actively engaged in running the business and teaching classes. The space itself can use a bit of sprucing up and the bikes should be outfitted with power meters given that more and more riders are using wearable devices to track performance metrics. Running a small business is very demanding and time consuming – Bill & Courtney seem to have Go Ryde under control and their business is thriving. I wish them all the best.

Ride on.
